It’s day 11th of 90 days English writing challenge to improve my English writing and thinking skills. The aim of this challenge is to reach a stage where I can produce very high quality content effortlessly.
In this article I will be sharing what I am trying out to improve my vocabulary. I was thinking to try this method out since very long time but due to my procrastination habits I skipped it for so long.
Noting down every unfamiliar word
I have started reading and listening a lot in order to improve my English writing, speaking and thinking skills too. So what usually happens is whenever I come across a word with which I am not familiar with I just look for its meaning to understand its usage. Though this method is quite helpful in getting to understand the usage but it fails when trying to recall those words later on. In order to keep those words into my long term memory I have to repeat them a lot either through using it in conversations or by keeping record of them somewhere else to look later on.
Learning its meaning and example sentences
First of all its important to have some sort of basic knowledge about the vocabulary in order to use them in conversation so its important to know their meaning and example sentences. Knowing the meaning will help me to understand the words in simple terms and example sentence will help in using the words in proper context. But I am pretty sure this two alone wouldn’t help much unless and untill I dont use them enough in my daily conversation.
Coming up with my own sentences
I can familiarize myself with the word and its meaning by looking up in dictionary but in order to have them in my long term memory I have to come up with my own sentences. I will be framing the sentences by connecting these new words with my own personal experience which require a bit of hard work rather than just looking up for some example sentences over internet or dictionary. Since this method pushes one to engage with the vocabulary learned it would surely go into the long term memory.
Writing a blog on the word learned
This one is just an addition to the previous tips of coming up with my own sentence for each new word. This method would help me to keep track of all the information that I have gained about the word from meaning to its right usage at one place to look later on. Doing this will also ensure remembrance and proper understanding of the word before moving on to next one.
My experience writing this article
Writing this article was much easier than all the previous ones but still I got confused a lot in between. I was forgetting some words when trying to frame the sentence but ended up using it’s alternative which turned out to be more better. I am satisfied with what I was able to come up with today. I wont say this is very high quality content but still when compared to the previous ones I can easily conclude this one is better in terms of knowledge and clarity.
Time it took me to write this article
It took me exactly an hour to produce this article. I thought that this article would take me hours to complete but was able to finish it pretty early.
