English is the mother tongue of most people who live in the US. But there also are a mix of people of different origins and tongues who live in this land and speak different languages. However, if you have ever noticed, Spanish is the most common foreign language, second to English and this is because of the amount of Hispanics that have made this country their home. You will find yourself among neighbours or colleagues who speak a lot of Spanish and hence acquire an interest in this language in comparison to others. And as a choice of second language, Spanish is a great choice. It is a beautiful and simple language and very close to the English language. Did you know that the words and alphabets in Spanish and English have a lot in common ? They also have a lot of commonality in vocabulary and even the way most of the words and alphabets sound. The similarity is undeniably prominent.
This is one of the main reasons why people who speak English find it very easy to pick up Spanish, and people who speak Spanish find English very simple and uncomplicated to learn. There is a comfort level between both sides in learning the other language. This is all because of the commonality between the two languages. In the US, it is very important that people be encouraged to learn Spanish and vice versa. This is helpful to the smooth functioning and co-ordination in different sections of the American society. There was a time when there were about 35 million Hispanics residing in the US. Today there are more than 40 million of them and most of them cannot speak English. So communication becomes difficult.
Hispanics have also become a very crucial part of the market and it has become increasingly important that English and Spanish to be encouraged as a means of reaching out to the masses. This so called Hispanic market was said to be $700 billion in the year 2004, and today it has risen further. To increase business, you need to learn Spanish. This helps you understand and draw the Hispanic customers to you. Our society is concentrated with Hispanics and it is culturally and financially important to adopt the Spanish language and make an effort to learn it.
I am sure it is not a difficult thing, and nothing is gained unless you put in a little effort. But today in the US it is worthwhile that there is an effort on the part of the Hispanics as well as the English speaking natives, to adopt each other’s language. It is no longer important to travel all the way to Mexico, to hear the Spanish language. Just look around you and you will find plenty of people who speak. And for those of you who want to go on a vacation. I am sure Spanish will be very helpful to you, wherever you might go, and so also with the English language. So ensure that you opt for English or Spanish as a second language, as it will be very beneficial to you.
